Preparing for Your Exam

NVH Imaging
For all exams, please check in at the north or south hospital admitting desk 10-15 minutes before your exam.

Preparing for a CT Scan

Upper Abdomen, Complete Abdomen (Abdomen and Pelvis)
You will be given a barium mixture so the radiologists can evaluate your digestive system more accurately. It is called Readi-Cat 2. Shake well before drinking.
  • For an exam of your upper abdomen you will be given one bottle of Readi-Cat 2.
    • Drink 10 ounces (two-thirds of a bottle) one hour before your exam.
    • Bring the remainder with you to your exam.
  • For an exam of your abdomen and pelvis you will be given two bottles of Readi-Cat 2.
    • Drink the first bottle two hours before your exam.
    • Drink 10 ounces (two-thirds of a bottle) one hour before your exam.
    • Bring the remainder with you to your exam.
Chest/Sinus/Head
No preparation is needed.

Preparing for a Radiology Exam

Upper GI or Small Bowel Follow-Through
Do not eat or drink anything after midnight.

Barium Enema
Eat according to the following schedule the day before your exam. You may take your regular medications with water. Do not eat or drink anything after midnight.

Note: The amount of fluid taken is very important to this exam. Drink at least 8 ounces of clear liquids every hour. Clear liquids include broth, strained fruit juice, Jell-O, or coffee or tea (no milk or cream).
  • Noon: clear liquids for lunch
  • 1 p.m.: one bottle magnesium citrate
  • 3:30 p.m.: three Dulcolax tablets with full glass of water
  • 5 p.m.: clear liquids for supper

Preparing for an Ultrasound

Upper Abdomen
Do not eat or drink anything after midnight. This can be one of several specific exams such as spleen, kidney, liver, gallbladder or pancreas. These exams will be scheduled in the morning.

Pelvic and OB
Drink 1 quart (32 ounces) of water one hour before your exam and hold it. You need a full bladder for this exam.

Renal (Kidney)
If this is the only exam you are having, do not eat or drink anything after midnight. Drink 8 ounces of water 45 minutes before your exam.

Renal Artery
You may drink clear liquids, but do not eat anything after midnight.

Aorta
If this is the only exam you are having, do not eat or drink anything after midnight.
