Patients undergoing an elective joint replacement surgery have some form of arthritis. Arthritis is a general term for a wide array of conditions which affect the joint, or tissues surrounding the joint, leading to deterioration with associated pain and functional impairment.
It is currently estimated that over 54 million adults in the United State are affected by varying forms of arthritis. It is projected that by the year 2040 that number will increase to 78 million making up nearly 26% of the adult population. The condition equally effects men and women until the age of 50 after which it tends to affect women more commonly.
