Guardian of the Month- August 2019
Congratulations to Phyllis Mayhew from Woodland Clinic!
Each month, Kalispell Regional Healthcare (KRH) selects an employee that goes above and beyond to demonstrate strong character. That employee is nominated and selected by peers as the Guardian of the Month. In August, Phyllis Mayhew from Woodland Clinic was chosen as the recipient.
Phyllis has worked as a certified medical assistant (CMA) at Woodland Clinic for nearly 33 years. She first moved to Kalispell in 1983 and worked as a CMA in the office of Dr. Winkel. In October of 1986, she joined the team at Woodland Clinic and worked with Drs. Al and Louise Swanberg, the father-daughter duo who ran the clinic at the time. Over the past 33 years, she has created and developed very strong relationships with patients, many of whom have been at the clinic even longer than she has. “We’re like a family here,” she explains. “We hug each other goodbye after our appointments, send each other cards on birthdays, and talk about everything. I smile when I see them on my schedule. It’s that direct patient contact that is my greatest joy.”
Co-workers describe Phyllis as a master medical assistant and the go-to person for almost any issue at the clinic. “Phyllis is our jill of all trades,” her nominator writes. “She is your quintessential medical assistant. She is 100% trustworthy, a great leader, and a wonderful asset to the clinic.” Phyllis’ reliability is unparalleled as well, as she has never missed a day of work other than for a scheduled vacation.
Woodland Clinic is known for their personal and friendly patient care and Phyllis is a significant part of that. She mentions that the greatest compliment she received was from a long-time patient who told her that she would hope that Phyllis would be around for the entirety of her life. And it’s no wonder why. Phyllis regularly goes above and beyond her job description to make sure that her patients receive the best care they can. She’ll go out of her way to call ASSIST to get them the help they need, Kalispell Medical Equipment to get them the supplies they need, or anyone else to make sure that they are properly cared for. But to Phyllis, this kind of service is nothing more than giving people the respect they deserve. “It’s just what we do,” she says. “You treat everyone with respect no matter who they are or where they come from. It’s just what we were raised to do.”
Phyllis is humbled by the fact that she was named the Guardian of the Month, but credits the rest of the team at Woodland Clinic for making that possible. “I love it over here. It’s a very close-knit group. We all work so well together.” She mentions the guidance and structure that the staff have provided over the years with giving the clinic the reputation it has today.
Outside of work, Phyllis loves to spend time hiking, reading, hunting, and doing CrossFit. She has been married for 36 years and has two adult sons. She especially loves to spoil her two grandchildren and looks forward to spoiling the third one, which is on the way.
