December Guardian of the Month
Congratulations to Stefanie McKain!
Each month, Kalispell Regional Healthcare (KRH) selects an employee that goes above and beyond to demonstrate strong character. They are nominated and selected by peers as the Guardian of the Month.
For the month of December, Stefanie McKain was chosen as the recipient. Stefanie is one of the medical librarians at KRH. Medical librarians are specially trained to research and provide information regarding medical diagnoses, procedures, tests, treatments and more to clinical professionals like physicians, nurses, therapists, pharmacists and hospital administrators.
For Stefanie, this is the perfect line of work for her. An avid reader and researcher, she enjoys tackling the new challenges that come her way. And those new challenges come frequently. “There’s always something different here,” said McKain. “You end up learning something new every day.”
One of the reasons Stefanie knew that she wanted to be a librarian was the satisfaction she got from conducting good research in college. She describes her favorite part of the job as the moments where she’s lucky enough to find exactly what she’s looking for. Medical research projects can be tedious and challenging, but the satisfaction that comes with completing them thoroughly is what makes it all worth it for her.
Stefanie has been working in KRH’s Medical Library for over a year. She originally started out in the business office at Pathways Treatment Center in 2017, but when she found out that there was an opening in the Medical Library, the opportunity seemed almost too good to be true. Stefanie is currently going to school to get her master’s degree in library sciences and so this was the perfect opportunity for her. She applied and was eventually chosen for the job by Heidi Sue Adams, the lead medical librarian.
Stefanie claims that the combination of her library studies classes and working with Heidi Sue have provided her with all the training she could possibly hope for. “It’s really nice working with her while going to school,” McKain continued. “The combination of the hands on work guided by Heidi Sue plus my education is really creating a solid foundation for me.”
It came as quite a surprise to Stefanie that she was chosen as the Guardian of the Month. “We usually fly under the radar here in the Medical Library,” she explained. But it is pretty clear that she is a good representative of the core values. “I just try to be as helpful as I can,” said McKain. “ If you’re just trying to be kind to your fellow employees then you just sort of naturally start following those values.”
Stefanie moved to Montana from Savannah, Georgia about three years ago. It’s been a big change in scenery for her, but she loves how beautiful northwest Montana is. Outside of work, she enjoys hiking with her husband in Glacier National Park, reading and her newfound passion, cooking.
