What is outpatient therapeutic respiratory care?

The outpatient respiratory therapy program is designed for individuals significant respiratory illness or disease resulting in decreased functional ability and quality of life.  Referring physicians anticipate that the patient would benefit from conditioning and breathing retraining. This includes patients with COPD that do not qualify for Pulmonary Rehabilitation.  Once enrolled in the program, patients work with a team of pulmonary rehabilitation specialists who will tailor the program to meet their specific needs.

Who needs outpatient therapeutic respiratory care?

The program is designed for patients with lung diseases such as emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, chronic bronchitis, fibrosis and other pulmonary conditions who:
  • Have shortness of breath that compromises their lifestyle
  • Want to learn more about their disease and ways to manage it
  • Want to learn ways to improve their breathing
  • Want to attain the highest level of independent function
Diagnoses for Respiratory Rehabilitation:
  • Chronic lower respiratory diseases: Persistent asthma, Bronchitis, Bronchiectasis, Cystic Fibrosis, Emphysema
  • Obstructive Lung Disease: Interstitial Diseases, Sarcoidosis, Occupational/environmental lung disease
  • Restrictive Lung Disease
  • Chest wall disease
  • Neuromuscular diseases: Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis
  • Obesity related respiratory disease: Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome, Obstructive Sleep Apnea
  • Other lung disorders: Lung cancer, Pulmonary Hypertension, Post-lung transplant

The outpatient respiratory therapy treatment plan includes instruction of maneuvers targeted to increase strength and endurance of respiratory muscles, and other strategies to improve respiratory function. Education is individualized based on needs regarding the specific lung disease or condition. Education Features include:
  • Tobacco cessation counseling
  • Nutritional assessment with Registered Dietitian
  • Breathing retraining to reduce and control breathing difficulties and control symptoms.
  • Understand your lung disease or condition, treatment options, and chronic disease coping strategies.
  • Learn to manage your disease and reduce your dependence on costly medical resources.
  • maintain healthy behaviors such as healthy nutrition, exercise, tobacco cessation.
  • Strategies to reduce symptom exacerbation
  • Medications, including drug actions, side effects, accurate use of inhalers, and self-care techniques
  • Understanding the use of oxygen therapy
  • Weight management
  • Breathing retraining techniques
  • Importance of exercise
  • Strategies for managing breathing problems
  • Assessment of symptoms and when to seek medical treatment
Psychosocial support:
Those with chronic lung disease or conditions are more prone to depression, anxiety, and other emotional problems.  Your respiratory rehabilitation team will help you assess your need for support groups or counseling.

How do I enroll?

A referral is needed from your physician documenting your diagnosis, need and reason for breathing retraining.  Pulmonary function test required.  Most insurance companies will cover respiratory rehabilitation services.  Please call our team at 751-4514 or 751-4504 for more information.
