Cardiac surgeon Drew L. Kirshner, MD, is a member of the medical staff and the practice of Rocky Mountain Heart and Lung. Dr. Kirshner attended medical school at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University and completed residencies in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. Prior to joining Kalispell Regional Healthcare, Dr. Kirshner was a cardiac surgeon with Midatlantic Cardiovascular Associates in Baltimore, Maryland. There, he practiced at Union Memorial Hospital, named one of America’s Best Hospitals for heart surgery and a 100 Top Hospital for cardiovascular care by Thompson Reuters. Dr. Kirshner treats all aspects of adult cardiac surgery, including beating heart bypass surgery (also known as off pump surgery). He also is experienced with aortic valve and mitral valve surgery and works in concert with his colleagues at Rocky Mountain Heart and Lung to ensure patients receive coordinated care. Having cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, pulmonologists and intensivists united in one practice is uncommon, according to Dr. Kirshner, but important for patient care. “Cardiac surgery is very much a team effort,” said Dr. Kirshner. “Working in concert with one another allows us to individualize patients’ care. Every case is different. For every operation we perform, our patients can expect as good, if not better, results compared with anywhere in the country.” When not practicing medicine or consulting with his family (six of Dr. Kirshner’s seven siblings are physicians, including two brothers who also are cardiac surgeons), Dr. Kirshner enjoys any outdoor activity, including skiing, riding dirt bikes or just napping.
