Frequently Asked Questions

What is medical nutrition therapy?
Medical nutrition therapy includes a thorough review of the food you eat, family health history and existing medical conditions. In one-on-one counseling sessions, the dietitian will assist you in improving your eating habits and create a personal meal plan tailored to your lifestyle, health issues and food preferences. Your registered dietitian can give you the personal attention you deserve to create a nutrition program just for you.

Is medical nutrition therapy covered by insurance?
Insurance coverage for medical nutrition therapy will vary by plan. Before scheduling an appointment, please check with your insurance carrier to confirm the extent of your coverage.

How long is a counseling session?
Typically the initial session is an hour, and follow-up appointments are 15 to 60 minutes, depending on your needs.

What is the cost?
Fees vary depending on the length of service provided. Financial arrangements and payment plans are available. Scholarships are available for those who meet income qualifications.

How do I make an appointment?
All nutrition consultations require a referral from a physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant in order to provide you with the most appropriate and individualized counseling session. A referral from a qualified health professional with an appropriate diagnosis code may be necessary to receive insurance reimbursement. Nutrition referrals may be faxed to (406) 751-4101. The dietitian will send a written summary of the counseling session and an outline of your goals to your health care provider. Once Nutrition Services has received the referral, a dietitian will contact you to schedule an appointment. Please verify your insurance coverage prior to scheduling an appointment. If your insurance company does not cover nutrition counseling, it will be billed as a self-pay visit.
