What is a sinus infection?
A sinus infection (sinusitis) is an inflammation of the sinus lining. A sinus infection can be brought on by a cold, allergies, infection or injury. Acute sinusitis can accompany a cold and last several weeks, while chronic sinusitis may continue for two or three months.

Common sinus infection symptoms include:
- Nasal congestion and difficulty breathing through your nose
- Thick nasal drainage
- Pain or tenderness around your nose, cheeks and forehead
- Reduced sense of smell
- Bad breath
How is a sinus infection treated?
Depending on the cause of a sinus infection, your provider may prescribe decongestants, nasal sprays or antibiotics. Follow-up treatment may be necessary for chronic sinus infections or for sinus infections caused by allergies or nasal polyps.
